Betfred Pays £900,000 After Gambling Commission Safety Review

Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, the operator behind Betfred, has agreed to pay £900,000 following a UK Gambling Commission assessment of its player protection systems. The regulator published the findings on 30 June 2026 after reviewing compliance procedures between May and June 2024.

Regulatory Findings and Settlement

The review identified several procedural gaps in the company’s automated monitoring framework. Systems designed to track excessive spending, extended session lengths and risk-related behaviour relied heavily on manual checks. Accounts flagged for review could not be reassessed for seven days, which delayed intervention. During this window, one player recorded a £17,900 loss within a single day without receiving any follow-up contact.

Internal policies also lacked a clear definition of strong harm indicators and did not trigger automated responses as required by Social Responsibility Code Provision 3.4.3. The settlement replaces a standard financial penalty and includes a published statement of facts plus a contribution toward regulatory investigation costs.

All funds will transfer to the government’s Consolidated Fund.

John Pierce, director of enforcement at the Gambling Commission, described the breaches as significant. "The Commission found that Petfre didn’t have sufficiently effective procedures in place, meaning some customers displaying markers of harm were not contacted quickly enough," he stated. "While the gaps we identified were unacceptable, the licensee acted swiftly to implement interim mitigating controls to address our immediate concerns.

They have since delivered an appropriate action plan and taken significant steps to assure the Commission that their current operating model meets our requirements."

The regulator noted full cooperation and prompt corrective measures as mitigating factors during the investigation. Earlier compliance assessments between May and June 2024 formed the basis for the current review, which focused on automated harm detection and manual intervention workflows.
