Over 30 representatives from gaming and betting companies joined local authorities to clear 240 kilograms of waste from Pembroke on September 7. The cleanup coincided with World Cleanup Month and targeted a high-traffic roadside corridor alongside a designated Natura 2000 zone.
Planning began in May following a meeting at the Eastern Regional Council offices in San Gwann with Andrea Borg Brincat and Ryan Zammit. The initiative aimed to organize September events across multiple locations. For the Pembroke leg, organizers selected two distinct areas: Triq Sant' Andrija, a stretch between Graziella and the Pembroke Military Cemetery containing significant plastic debris, and the rocky slopes of the Natura 2000 site above the Pembroke Firing Ranges and Reverse Osmosis plant.
Pembroke Local Council approved the dual approach.
Operational Setup and Participation
Volunteers gathered at 09:00 at Melita Football Club, which manager Johan opened for the session. The operation received logistical support from CleanMalta and traffic management from LESA officers. The Grid Malta, represented by founder Michael Naudi, joined as a partner. The roadside segment operated as the Endurance clean-up under iGEN direction, while the council environment team managed the Natura 2000 section. Several local children participated alongside corporate staff from Games Global, Kindred Group, Betsson, Bet365, 1Gamechanger, Flutter, and NoID.The morning proceeded under clear skies despite recent thunderstorms and high humidity. Teams completed the collection across both zones before concluding the session. The initiative represents the first coordinated environmental program for the participating organizations in the region this year.
